Almost half of Minnesota voters support legal sports betting

Just under half of likely voters in Minnesota? support the legalisation of sports betting, but a significant portion of the electorate is still unsure, a poll released on Sunday found.

The survey revealed that 48 percent would support sports betting in the state, with only 33 percent saying they are opposed. However, the survey also showed that one-in-five voters was still unsure of their position.

The poll was conducted on Sept. 12 to 14 on behalf of APM Research Labs in partnership with three local media outlets. The survey also polled voters’ opinions on President Joe Biden’s performance and a range of key issues, including the economy and jobs, education and climate change.

South Minnesota opposed

When it came to the legalisation of sports betting the results were even across Minnesota Democrats and Republicans, as well as most gender and age groups. The age demographic of between 35 to 49 is most favourable at 52 percent of respondents.

In terms of regions, voters in the south of Minnesota were the least likely to support sports betting, with only 39 percent in favour, equivalent to those who say they are opposed.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a ban on sports betting in 2018, nearly two thirds of U.S. states have moved to allow wagers on sports, either in person, online or both. Some notable exceptions where the practice is still banned include potential giants, California and Texas.

Californians will get their chance to vote on the issue in Congressional elections in November. According to a poll released last week, the majority in the state say they are not in favour of legal sports betting.
