China, Cambodia strengthen alliance to combat online gambling and cybercrime?

China and Cambodia have deepened their cooperation in tackling cross-border crimes, particularly focusing on online gambling and cyber scams. This renewed commitment was solidified during a meeting between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summits in Laos.?

In a social media post, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin highlighted that both leaders have pledged to intensify efforts against these rising criminal activities. Wang emphasised that the two nations are aligning their actions to foster a “common destiny,” stressing their unified stance in fighting transnational crimes.

“This is the fourth meeting between the two sides, which has yielded many fruitful achievements, and has become a strong impetus for China and Cambodia to strengthen mutual confidence in strategic and practical cooperation,” Wang stated.?

Major crackdown on online fraud

Online fraud and illicit activities, particularly telecommunication crimes tied to gambling, have become pressing concerns in both Cambodia and China. Criminal networks exploiting cross-border operations frequently target vulnerable individuals, luring them into scams involving online gambling and forced labour.?

Noteworthy progress has already been made this year. In the first half of 2024, China and Cambodia jointly deported over 1,200 suspects involved in online fraud and cyber scams. Wang commended Cambodia for its strong stance, particularly in cracking down on telecom fraud in Sihanoukville, resulting in the repatriation of perpetrators to China.?

A growing regional consensus?

The fight against cross-border crime is not confined to China and Cambodia. According to Wang, the crackdown on online gambling and cyber scams has evolved into a regional effort, with countries across Southeast Asia joining forces to confront these escalating threats.?

This collaboration underscores the wider regional commitment to curbing cross-border criminal activity. Wang highlighted that countries in the region are increasingly cooperating in these efforts, and he expressed confidence that this joint approach will yield more effective outcomes.

“China and Cambodia will continue to work together to strengthen and expand the friendly relationship between the two countries. The cooperation between the two countries is met with broader opportunities and will yield more fruitful results,” he said.

Looking ahead

China has promised continued support to Cambodia in the fight against cybercrime and transnational criminal activities, with the goal of creating a safer and more secure region. This partnership between China and Cambodia is seen as a key element in the broader battle against such crimes. Wang reaffirmed that the close ties between the two nations will only strengthen, paving the way for more successful outcomes in the years to come.?
