Daniel Weinman claims historic victory at World Series of Poker main event

Atlanta’s poker pro triumphs over 10,043 players to win $12.1 million prize

Atlanta’s Daniel Weinman emerged as the new champion of the World Series of Poker Main Event, triumphing over a record-breaking field of 10,043 players and securing a remarkable prize of US$12.1 million. Weinman’s victory in the 54th year of the WSOP surpasses the previous record set by Jamie Gold in 2006, who outlasted a field of 8,733 entrants. For the second consecutive year, the WSOP was hosted at the Horseshoe Las Vegas, situated on the famous Las Vegas Strip.

The 2023 WSOP Main Event featured an entry fee of US$10,000, resulting in a combined payment of US$100.4 million from the 10,043 participants. The prize pool amounted to an impressive US$93.4 million, with around US$7 million allocated for fees and staff costs.

Starting the final day in second position among the remaining three players, the 35-year-old wasted no time etching his name in the annals of poker history. He swiftly eliminated Adam Walton after an intense pre-flop clash, holding a pair of Aces against Walton’s pocket Eights. Weinman then proceeded to conclude the heads-up play against overnight chip leader Steven Jones in just 24 hands.

Reflecting on his win in an interview with PokerNews, Weinman expressed his awe at the astounding turnout in this year’s World Series. He humbly acknowledged the element of luck in poker tournaments, stating that while he believed he played exceptionally well, he also encountered several instances of fortuitous circumstances.

Reaching the final table can lead to various outcomes, as there were many skilled players with more tournament experience than him. However, when the field narrowed down to three, Weinman felt confident in his abilities, considering himself the superior player. A few opportune hands at crucial moments proved to be the winning formula.

The inaugural WSOP took place in 1970 at Binion’s Horseshoe, where seven esteemed poker players were invited to compete in a series of cash games, with the winner determined by vote. Over the years, the WSOP has evolved into the most renowned and extensive poker series worldwide. The 2023 edition featured a staggering 95 separate bracelet events, with the Main Event as its pinnacle.
