Denmark blocks 82 unlicensed websites in regulator’s biggest gaming ban to date

Since the implementation of the current Gambling Act in 2012, 227 illegal websites have been shut down

The Danish gaming authority, Spillemyndigheden, has been given permission by the Frederisksberg court to shut 82 unlicensed websites that were providing gaming to Danish consumers. The regulator‘s most recent list of blocks is also its longest one to date.

Spillemyndigheden keeps an eye on online gambling operators to spot any offers that are not authorised, using methods including tip-offs from members of the public and authorised operators.

SpillemyndighedenSince the current Gambling Act’s introduction in 2012, 227 illicit websites have been stopped altogether, with the most recent 82 containing both sports betting and casino platforms.

All of the DGA’s website blocks have been approved by the City Court of Frederiksberg, which approved 55 website bans in total in 2021. This most recent development shows a clear increase in the government’s enforcement efforts against unlicensed operators in the nation.

Spillemyndigheden Director Anders Dorph stated “Spillmyndigheden was established to ensure the framework for a fair gambling market. One of our most important tasks in that context is to protect players against illegal gambling and to ensure that they are not exposed to gambling providers that do not have a licence in Denmark.”

The regulator continues battling the underground economy with the ultimate objective being to outlaw unauthorised gambling in Denmark and maintain a favorable gambling environment for Danes.

Spillmyndigheden declared earlier this month that its national gambling helpline, Stopspillet, was a success, demonstrating that it was successfully reaching its target audience.
