Finland ramps up identification requirements

Finnish gambling operator, Veikkaus, is implementing identity verification requirements for any players participating in their games.

These changes include scratch cards such as ?ss? and Casino lottery, following a similar identification requirement introduced earlier this year for coupon games such as Lotto and Eurojackpot.

Veikkaus is introducing these measures as it is heavily intent on embracing responsible gaming practices.

Finland’s online gambling monopoly run by Veikkaus is currently undergoing many other reforms with the intention of bringing them in line with new legislative objectives.

Player identification

Players can now verify their identity through various means, including the Veikkaus card, driver’s licence, personal identification card, Kela card or mobile card via the Veikkaus app.

Lottery winnings from scratch cards will still require scratching to reveal the prize and identification information is required for claiming the winnings.

Ville Venoj?rvi, director of Veikkaus’ sweepstakes, stated on the matter:

“The conditions for identification of scratch cards are good because we have a very large customer base with the identification of coupon games.”

Gaming in Europe

These new measures are aligned with changes in teh European gaming industry.

Within Finland, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has been advocating for similar reforms in the nation for some time now.

The proposal includes the requirement for operators offering online gambling, such as casino games and betting, to obtain a licence, along with other legislative changes such as increases in fees, taxation, safer gambling regulations, and advertising rules.

Veikkaus’ monopoly

Veikkaus currently holds the exclusive right to offer gambling services in Finland, including lotteries, casinos and betting.

These changes seek to enhance player safety and responsible gaming, in line with global industry standards, offering Finnish players a safer and more enjoyable gambling environment.
